Erasmus+ Student Mobility for Traineeship (SMT)

Erasmus+ Student Mobility for Traineeship is a mobility activity that enables students enrolled at our University to gain professional training and/or practical work experience at a company, institution, or organization abroad in a field related to their current academic or professional education.

The purpose of the traineeship is to provide students with practical work experience in their existing field of professional education. The traineeship does not have to be compulsory for the student's degree programme; however, the economic sector in which the traineeship is undertaken must be relevant to the student's current field of study.

A traineeship cannot be used for research, analysis, thesis work, or similar academic activities carried out as part of the student's academic programme. Activities undertaken by students solely to complete or support their own academic or scientific work are not considered traineeships as long as they remain academic in nature. For such activities to qualify as a traineeship, they must be carried out as professional activities with an economic value within the relevant sector.

For example, working for an R&D company or the R&D department of a company for product development purposes, or participating in experimental studies and research conducted by a company engaged in economic activity at a higher education institution or research centre, may be considered a traineeship activity.

Duration of the Mobility

Student mobility for traineeship may be carried out for a period of a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 12 months at each study cycle.

A traineeship may be undertaken:

  • During the student's period of study.

  • At any stage of the student's degree programme.

  • By final-year students within 12 months following their graduation.

Post-Graduation Traineeship

Students who wish to undertake a traineeship after graduation must submit their applications before graduation, while they are still enrolled as students at associate, bachelor's, or graduate level. Students who have already graduated cannot apply for Erasmus+ traineeship mobility.

The post-graduation traineeship must be completed within 12 months from the date of graduation.

In addition, the total duration of the post-graduation traineeship and any previous Erasmus+ mobility periods completed by the student at the same study cycle must not exceed 12 months.

Eligible Host Organizations

Traineeships may be hosted by various types of organizations and institutions, including:

  • Small, medium-sized, or large enterprises in the public or private sector

  • Local, regional, or national public institutions

  • Embassies or consulates of the sending country abroad

  • Training centres and institutes

  • Research centres

  • Business organizations and associations, including chambers of commerce, chambers of trades and crafts, stock exchanges, and trade unions

  • Schools, institutes, and educational centres, including institutions providing vocational or adult education, from pre-primary to secondary education

  • Non-profit organizations, associations, and NGOs

  • Organizations providing career planning, professional consultancy, and information services

  • Higher education institutions. Higher education institutions located in third countries associated with the Programme must hold an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). Higher education institutions in third countries not associated with the Programme must be recognized by a competent authority in accordance with their national legislation and must have signed an inter-institutional agreement with the sending institution before the traineeship takes place.

The size, legal status, or economic sector of the organization is not, in itself, a determining factor for eligibility. Any public or private organization engaged in economic activity may serve as a host organization for a traineeship, provided that it meets the applicable Erasmus+ requirements.

Traineeships at Higher Education Institutions

A higher education institution may also serve as a host organization. However, the activity undertaken must not constitute an academic learning activity; rather, it should provide the student with practical work experience within the relevant department or unit.

Graduate students who are in the thesis stage and wish to carry out academic activities under the supervision of an academic advisor, particularly activities that are recognized for academic credit, cannot undertake such activities as part of a traineeship. Students wishing to conduct such academic activities should apply under Erasmus+ Student Mobility for Studies instead.

Organizations Not Eligible to Host Erasmus+ Traineeships

Erasmus+ higher education student traineeships cannot be carried out at the following organizations:

Erasmus+ Grant

Students selected for the Erasmus+ programme may be eligible to receive financial support (grant) in accordance with the rules and budget determined for the relevant academic year.

The Erasmus+ grant is not intended to cover all living expenses incurred by students abroad. Its primary purpose is to contribute to the additional costs that may arise as a result of participating in the mobility programme.

Provided that students fulfil their obligations under the Erasmus+ programme and comply with the terms and conditions of the grant agreement, they are not required to repay the grant received. The grant amounts and the number of students to be awarded grants are determined in accordance with the Erasmus+ rules applicable to the relevant academic year and the University's available budget.

Students may also participate in Erasmus+ mobility without receiving a grant. Zero-grant students are subject to the same application and selection procedures as grant-supported students and are entitled to the same academic rights arising from the mobility activity. The main difference is that zero-grant students are not included in the grant budget and do not receive Erasmus+ financial support.

Student Status

Erasmus+ students remain enrolled at our University throughout their period abroad. Students are not required to suspend or freeze their enrolment at the University in order to participate in Erasmus+ mobility.
